What is a Well Woman Exam- and why it matters

Many New Zealanders are familiar with cervical screening and contraception checks, but not with the broader Well Woman Exam — a comprehensive women’s‑health assessment that gynaecologists routinely provide in the United States. I've brought this approach into my private practice because it fills an important gap in preventative care.

A Well Woman Exam is a holistic health check designed to pick up issues early, answer questions you may not know to ask, and give you clarity about your reproductive and general health.
What a Well Woman Exam Includes-

Health screening and risk assessment

Many people don’t realise they may be at risk for familial cancer syndromes such as hereditary breast, ovarian, or colon cancer. A Well Woman Exam includes a review of your personal and family history to identify patterns that might warrant earlier screening or genetic testing.

Identifying red flags

Some symptoms seem minor but are actually important warning signs — things like postmenopausal bleeding, abnormal nipple discharge, unexpected pelvic pain, or changes in menstrual patterns. These can be early indicators of conditions that benefit from prompt evaluation.

Education and personalised guidance

This is your chance to ask questions you’ve never had answered: perimenopause, contraception options, sexual health, pelvic floor concerns, vulval symptoms, and more. Many patients tell me this is the most valuable part of the visit.

STI screening when appropriate

STI testing is available for anyone who wants it — whether for reassurance, routine screening, or because of new sexual partners. It’s discreet, straightforward, and tailored to your needs.

A Well Woman Exam also includes- a head‑to‑toe physical assessment. This involves a breast exam and guidance on how to perform self‑breast checks confidently at home. I also carry out a pelvic exam, and if cervical screening is indicated, a Pap smear can be done at the same visit. These examinations are tailored to your comfort and your individual needs, and they’re an important part of picking up early changes that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Why It’s Important-A Well Woman Exam is about preventive care, not just problem‑solving. It helps catch issues early, clarifies risks you may not know you have, and gives you space to talk about your health in a way that routine appointments often don’t allow. If you’re interested in a more comprehensive approach to your reproductive and general health, a Well Woman Exam can be an excellent place to start.

I offer Well Woman Exams in my clinic, and I see them as an important investment in your long‑term health. Whether or not you have insurance, coming in once a year gives us the chance to pick up issues early, clarify any risks, and make sure you have the information you need to stay well. And if I identify anything that requires further assessment or treatment, I can always refer you into the public system so you’re supported in the right place.
